In addition to their ability to comply with existing green building standards, gypsum panels and gypsum products are environmentally preferable in a variety of ways:

  • Gypsum panels are indoor air quality friendly as measured by current assessment standards.
  • Gypsum is an inert, non-toxic mineral and, therefore, harmless to human life either in its natural ore form, or as a synthetic byproduct of manufacturing or power-generation processes.
  • To mitigate the formation of mold and mildew, gypsum panel products are increasingly manufactured with specialized facings and core formulations.

And gypsum plants win awards! A number of gypsum manufacturing facilities in North America have received awards for environmental consciousness and safety programs including recognition from groups as diverse as the Wildlife Habitat Council, and the Mine Safety Health Administration.

Gypsum manufacturers began incorporating recycled paper facings into gypsum board more than 50 years ago, while synthetic gypsum was first integrated into the core of gypsum board almost a quarter of a century ago. It is this constant desire to improve the basic gypsum product line that has driven the gypsum manufacturing industry to be a leader in the production of environmentally conscious building materials.

As integrated manufacturers of a variety of building materials, GA member companies are firmly committed to manufacturing environmentally acceptable and sustainable products that reflect the use of energy-efficient and progressive manufacturing technology.
